Speed Up Your Website to Improve On-Page Search Engine Optimization

One of the most important factors in On Page Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is your page speed. If your website loads slowly, you don’t just drive away potential customers. Search Engines will index your pages more slowly, if at all, and they will send less traffic over time. After all, what is the point of showing your website to new people if they don’t ever wait around for it to slowly load?

In August, I had re-developed the Chamber of CannaBiz website with a brand new Member Directory, Events Calendar, Marketplace, and other fun features. I got so wrapped up in designing the fun new features for the site, that I forgot to check the new page speed after all those changes. When I checked it today, I found that the website was extremely slow!

In the interest of speeding the website up to make the experience better for both humans and robots, I have run a number of different changes and tests on the site. I have optimized the images, the code, the javascript, the css, the html, and other components. I have also rearranged the front page and other pages of the website and removed some of the newer features that were just too processor intensive. I removed all of the animated fade ins and other visual effects. They look cool, but they slow everything down quite a bit, so I can certainly live without them.

Using the Google Page Speed Insights tool to troubleshoot, I took the site from it’s beginning score of 25 mobile / 55 desktop, to 74 Mobile / 92 Desktop, with about 2 hours of work. The highest possible score is 100.

I’ll come back and speed it up some more another day. But in the meantime, the search engine robots will definitely view these updates favorably in the coming weeks!
